A new President...

The defeat of the Liberal Party of Canada in the last federal elections has kicked off a long-due change in our party’s internal structure. The current situation of the Party calls for strong leadership all across the board. The Women's Commission, the Seniors’ Commission, the Aboriginal People’s Commission, the Party Leadership, and of course, the Young Liberals, all require strong people at the helm; leaders with fresh ideas.

Leadership conventions are always a complex and divisive exercise with multiple political alliances, a variety of candidates and a diversity of opinions. The election of the President of the Young Liberals should be straightforward and decisive. It should be based on the ideas and intentions of the candidate, and not his allegiances. Our Party, weak as it is, needs leaders with conviction, men and women who can carry the powerful messages the Party has to deliver to Canadians.

A few days ago I heard that Pascal Dessureault was considering running for the position of President of the Young Liberals. Though some might argue that Dessureault is a downright stranger in the West, he is, however, an extremely bright, dynamic and popular young man with the ambition of a true leader. What's more, the next convention will be held in Montreal—a bastion for this potential candidate. He not only has the capacity, but the undying will to bring forward and defend young Canadians’ interests. He has constantly voiced out the progressive ideals of young Grits. A Liberal-at-heart, he has relentlessly defended the unity of our federation. I would strongly encourage his candidacy for the position of President of the Young Liberals of Canada.

Many argue that it is perhaps early to offer one’s unconditional support for a candidate; much can happen in the months leading up to the convention. The handful of candidates that have officially launched their candidacy are somewhat unknown to the average Canadian and even long-time party members, their policies remain undisclosed, their leadership abilities yet to be discovered. Strong leaders are easily identified though; I am convinced Dessureault would be the best choice for young Liberals. I encourage him to run… As should you!
